1IntroductionOverview of the DD Management CenterInstallationThis chapter describes the hardware and software componentsrequired at your site to perform a successful DD ManagementCenter installation.VMware ComponentsDD Management Center runs on either a dedicated blade on avCenter server or a standalone VMware ESX/ESXi server machine.Configuration of the VMware virtual machine forDD Management Center is performed with the vSphere client GUI.Performing the DD Management Center Installation on page 16describes the vSphere client installation for both types of servers.Data Domain ComponentsThe array of Data Domain systems that will be under theDD Management Center management must be in place andreachable via the network and administrator passwords arerequired for each. The DD Management Center software is downloaded to a localserver reachable from the VMware server where the DDManagement Center installation will reside.About the Download ProcessAfter requesting and registering a copy of the DD ManagementCenter software on the Data Domain Support Web Site(https://my.datadomain.com), you will be provided with an emailcontaining a serial number and a link to download the package, either purchased or evaluation copy, which you will download toData Domain Management Center Initial Configuration Guide9
a local server. This image will be accessed by the VMware serverduring the DD Management Center installation procedure.10Introduction
2 Planning the DD ManagementCenter EnvironmentDetermining Data Domain SystemRequirementsPart of the DD Management Center installation on the VMwareserver requires choosing a deployment type, based on the numberof Data Domain systems to be managed. The three types ofdeployments that can be implemented and their hardwarerequirements are provided in Table 2-1.Table 2-1:Deployment TypesSizeDD SystemsManagedVirtual CPU(vCPU)Memory(GB)VM Disk SizeBase Install Database (GB)Small1 to 251 vCPU240 50Medium1 to 502 vCPU340 100Large1 to 752 vCPU440 200Determining VMware RequirementsVMware requirements include: VMware Hardware and Software System Requirements on page 12 Additional VMware Software Applications on page 12Data Domain Management Center Initial Configuration Guide11
VMware Hardware and Software SystemRequirementsThe VMware hardware and software required to host a DDManagement Center installation can be: the vCenter Management Server installation, whichaccommodates a variety of virtual machines, of which one isthe DD Management Center. The server is where the virtualmachines are configured, provisioned, and managed. one of: ESX server running vSphere 4.1 ESXi server running vSphere 4.1 ESXi server running vSphere 5.0vSphere client, a Windows-based GUI interface which allowsusers to remotely connect to either of the server types above toperform remote management.Storage for the VMware installation can be provided using NAS (Virtual Disks over NFS) SAN (Virtual Disks over VMFS)High Availability RequirementsIf a high availability configuration is required, use the VMwaresoftware option of your choice to implement this.Additional VMware Software ApplicationsThe following VMware software can be used on the VMwareinstallation to help manage the virtual systems.VMware Migration SoftwarevMotion moves a running virtual machine from one physicalserver to another with no impact to end users. Used for serverconsolidation, disaster recovery, and flexibility when maximizingresource efficiency.12Planning the DD Management Center Environment
VMware High Availability SoftwarevSphere HA provides cost-effective high availability for anyapplication running in a virtual machine, regardless of itsoperating system or underlying hardware configuration.VMware Fault Tolerant SoftwarevSphere Fault Tolerance (FT) for virtual machines provides zerodowntime, zero data loss, and continuous availability forapplications, without the cost and complexity of traditionalhardware or software clustering solutions.VMware Backup/Restore SoftwareVM image-based backup: The disk images of the VM are backed up as a whole, forexamples: VMware Data Recovery (VDR), Avamar, etc. Crash-consistent backup in case of restore; both file system andapplication recovery is needed (automatically)Data Domain Management Center Initial Configuration Guide13
