IntroductionThis document contains definitions of terms and acronyms found in the documentation for theMetasys system products and serves as a convenient reference.AActive Directory Federation Services (ADFS)Active Directory Federation Services. ADFS is an add-on, licensed feature to add support forMetasys using Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS), a single sign-on solution developedby Microsoft . ADFS can then, in turn, be used to provide 2-factor authentication for access toMetasys.Active Directory ServiceA network operating technology that enables Information Technology (IT) administrators tomanage enterprise-wide information from a central repository. This information includes datacenter policy compliance and identity management (user logon accounts), which are used for bothMicrosoft Windows Operating System (OS) authentication (logon to the Windows OS) as well asnetwork resource authentication (logon to enterprise-wide secured applications, such as email).Active Directory Service Domain/Domain ControllerA collection of domain controllers that serve as a security boundary for network resources.A domain controller provides the Active Directory service to network users and computers;stores directory data; and manages user and domain interactions including the logon process, authentication, and directory searches.Active Directory Service SchemaThe formal definition of all object and attribute data that can be stored in the directory. Forexample, user is an object type with attribute data of name, first name, last name, e-mail, and soon. The schema is made up of object classes and attributes. The base (or default) schema containsa rich set of object classes and attributes to meet the needs of most organizations, and is modeledafter the International Standards Organization (ISO) X.500 standard for directory services.Active Directory Service—Service AccountA logon account assigned to an application to enable the application to perform privileged actionswithin Active Directory service. The Metasys system requires one or more Service Accounts to beassigned to allow the system to perform directory queries and request Active Directory serviceauthentication. Only one Service Account is allowed per domain.Active Directory Service User AccountA logon account assigned to a user account that is created, stored, and maintained only withinActive Directory service. This user account provides access to Active Directory service NetworkResources. The account may also provide access to the Metasys system when added and privilegedusing the Metasys Security Administration system.AnnotationsA note or comment that operators can add to describe or detail a change they made, such as whythey commanded a setpoint or made a change to the schedule.Application and Data Server, (ADS)Application and Data Server, (ADS). A Metasys server that allows you to expand beyond the sitemanagement capabilities, number of connections limitations, and historical data storage limits ofNetwork Automation Engines (NAEs), Network Integration Engines (NIEs), Network Control Engines(NCEs), SNE series network engines, and SNC series network engines. An ADS uses a free versionMetasys System Glossary3

of Microsoft SQL Server software to manage historical data on a computer that does not have aserver-class OS. For a more robust system, an extended ADS is available (ADX).Application and Data Server, Lite version, (ADS-Lite)Application and Data Server, Lite version. A lower-capacity Metasys server that is available forpurchase in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. The ADS-Lite products offer the same functionality asthe standard ADS, but can serve as the Site Director for only the smaller-capacity network engines(NCE25/NIE29, NAE35/NIE39, NAE45/NIE49, and SNE110L0).Advanced Graphics Application (AGA)An enhanced graphics programming package that provides dynamic capabilities such as animation, color changes, and flashing for the Metasys system. Dynamic graphics can be defined in MicrosoftVisio Professional 2003 software using the Advanced Graphics add-on application and GraphicsExample stencil. Graphic files are converted to Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) and imported intothe User Graphics Tool. You can access a second graphics viewer, the Adobe SVG Viewer, fromwithin the existing user interface to view the advanced graphics.Note: AGA is no longer supported at Metasys Release 11.0.Advanced Graphics Symbol Library (AGSL)A collection of predefined dynamic graphics that can be defined in Microsoft Visio Professional 2003software using the Advanced Graphics application and converted to Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG).SVG files then can be imported into the User Graphics Tool and viewed in the Site ManagementPortal User Interface (UI).ADXExtended Application and Data Server. A Metasys server that allows you to expand beyond the sitemanagement capabilities, number of connections limitations, and historical data storage limitsof NAEs, NIEs, and ADSs. An ADX uses a full version of Microsoft SQL Server software to managehistorical data on a computer with a server-class OS.Alarm ManagerA feature in the Metasys UI that provides a view of all alarms in the Metasys system. From this view, you can take certain actions, such as sorting, acknowledging, and discarding alarms.Application Programming Interface (API)Metasys Monitoring and Commanding Application Programming Interface (API). This API enablesreading, writing, and commanding of one or more Metasys objects or properties to provide asecure way to bi-directionally integrate with third-party applications. At Release 11.0, this API isenhanced to optimize its integration with Johnson Controls Enterprise Management (JEM). Thisensures a robust and cyber-secure integration between Metasys and JEM.ArchiveLocation within a database on nonvolatile media for safe long-term storage of data. Archive is aterm used for both site-specific system configuration data (archive database) and historical data(historical database). The term archive is also used to refer to the task of saving updates to thearchive database.AuthenticationThe process of identifying and verifying a user via user name and password, or by verifying aSecurity Token. Authentication precedes authorization.AuthorizationThe process of granting access to specific functions and data based upon privileges defined in thesecurity system. Authorization follows authentication.4Metasys System Glossary
